2016 Salem Public Schools District-Wide Strategic Planning Process
SPS is in the process of formulating a strategic plan that will outline a blueprint for the future. The goal of the strategic planning process is to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses six key levers for change (see below), along with other topics that are relevant to the future of the district. To inform this plan, the Superintendent wants to be sure to hear the perspectives of as many voices throughout the city as possible. First, a group of community representatives, educators, and staff are serving along with two School Committee representatives and senior district staff on the Strategic Plan Steering Committee to provide leadership for the overall strategic plan. Second, over 70 community members, educators, and other staff members are participating in six work teams representing six key areas of focus for our work in the
coming years. These six "levers for change" are:
Lever #1: Meeting the diverse needs of all learners -- How can we address the diverse learning needs of all students?
Lever #2: Early childhood education -- What will it take to get every Salem child ready for school?
Lever #3: Family and community engagement -- How can we deepen partnerships and make every parent feel welcome in school?
Lever #4: The future of high school education -- How can we prepare all of our students for their future?
Lever #5: Portfolio of school options -- How can we create a set of innovative school models, programs, and approaches to learning?
Lever #6: Teacher leadership and empowerment -- How can we recruit and retain great teachers who are fully prepared and empowered to prepare young people for the 21st century?
Finally, several efforts to reach out to the broader community are planned. The Salem Citywide Conversation held on 11/29/16 was the first in a series of opportunities to engage members of Salem's community in developing a vision for the future of our schools. During the event, participants heard opening remarks from the Mayor and Superintendent and participated in small group discussions focused on their hopes and dreams for Salem Public Schools within the context of the six key "levers for change" which are key areas of focus for the strategic plan. In addition, participants had a chance to share their ideas regarding their vision for SPS graduates by responding to the question: What skills and qualities should an SPS graduate have in order to thrive in the 21st century?
