Salem Public Schools is continuing a preventive dental program in the 2016-2017 school year. Beginning in December, Polished LLC will be visiting all of the Salem schools to provide dental evaluations, cleanings, sealants, fluoride varnish and referrals to local dentists for other care needed.
Parents and guardians should watch for a packet from Polished LLC coming home from their child's school. The program is designed to provide preventive care to all students, whether or not they have dental insurance. The program is optional and parents/guardians must complete the Medical History and Informed Consent, found in the Polished LLC packet, in order for their child to be seen. Students over 18 may enroll themselves.
The Polished team will spend 1-2 days in each of the schools. Students will be out of class for a minimal amount of time, based on the student's schedule. Treatment will be scheduled so it does not conflict with MCAS or other school testing. A written report will be provided for each student examined and will be sent home with the student.
According to the US Health Resources and Services Administration, Massachusetts has 348,040 people “unserved” by dental care. 200,000 children in Massachusetts who are enrolled in MassHealth do not receive any care from a dentist even though they are eligible for preventive care and treatment.
