The Salem Public Schools Social Emotional Learning goals are to address all student’s social and emotional needs in order for each student to be able to achieve success in the classroom and school environment. Our district believes developing SEL skills improves not only student capacity to engage in academic learning, but it has shown to increase school attendance, encourage pro social behaviors and found to have preventative measures for bullying behaviors.
WHAT IS SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” – The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
