Parents Corner

The Parents' Corner is designed to provide parent(s)/guardian(s) with the information needed to navigate the special education process. So where does the process start you may be wondering. The process typically starts with you or the teacher having a concern with your child’s progress in school. The concern may be one brought up to you by a teacher, specialist, or other trusting adult.

If you are having a concern with an area of your child’s development in school, the first step is always talk to the teacher. By first discussing the concern with your child's teacher, there may be small changes or accommodations that can be implemented to help. If you and/or the teacher still have concerns, the teacher can refer the student through the schools intervention support team. This is a group of educators that get together, discuss the concern, and implement interventions designed to bolster your child’s needs. If the intervention team has implemented interventions and your child is still experiencing difficulty making progress, than the team may decide to refer your child for a special education evaluation. Read through the referral section to find out more.

If your child has already been identified for special education and you still have questions read through our special education website to find out more information. Each school has an administrator, referred to as a “Team Chair” that oversees the special education process for the school. Each child with an IEP has a special education teacher liaison listed on the administrative page of the IEP who tends to the child's IEP. These are great resources to contact if you find it easier to speak to someone regarding your question/concern.

As you read through, you may find vocabulary that is specific to Special Education. In fact, Special Education is filled with specific terms that can become rather confusing. Use this Special Education glossary for support! Additionally, DESE has put together a guide to understanding the special education process for parents. Within the link you can download the guide currently in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Also, DESE most recently released an interactive guide for understanding the special education process linked here.
