When the students are away, the staff...replaces the coolers!
Salem Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services took advantage of the April break to tackle a number of renovations through the Food Security Infrastructure Grant.
Among them, the walk-in coolers at both the Bates Elementary School and the Saltonstall School (soon to be the Sarah Parker Remond School) were demolished and replaced with brand new mechanicals, evaporators and condensers, making for robust new wings of the kitchens at both schools.
Additionally, new combination ovens were installed at Saltonstall, Bentley and Salem High School, along with new cooking lines at the High School and new ice machines at both SHS and Collins Middle School.
"Through this grant we`re able to store more food for longer periods, and enable to drive our locally-sourced food program," said SPS Food and Nutrition Services Operations Manager Robbie Armstrong `05. "As we transition to the Sarah Parker Remond School next year, we`re hitting the ground running with brand new ovens and cooling and freezing equipment."
