A Message from the Superintendent of Schools

Dear Families,

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of Jennifer “Jeffie” Chapin who until recently was a fourth-grade math teacher at Bentley Charter School.

Ms. Chapin, a teacher with Salem Public Schools during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years, died in an equestrian accident on August 11.

Jeffie’s colleagues described her as a dedicated teacher who went above and beyond to inspire her students. She was an active member of Bentley's Family Engagement Leadership Team and a leader on the Houses initiative. During her time with the district, Ms. Chapin had a positive, lasting impact on her colleagues and students that will not be forgotten.

Members of the district's crisis response team will be available to provide grief counseling to staff, students and families. Please do not hesitate to contact the Bentley Charter School's main office if you or your child is in need of additional supports.

On behalf of the entire Salem Public Schools community, I extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Chapin's family, friends, students and colleagues.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathleen Smith

Interim Superintendent of Schools
