PreK-5 Families: The following is a letter from Assistant Superintendent, Kate Carbone.
Hello parents and family members,
As I write to you, we are in our fifth week of the school closure that was prompted by the coronavirus crisis—it is hard to believe that this much time has passed already. I know that these past few weeks have been enormously challenging for you and your family as you have the weight and concern of keeping yourself and children safe and healthy while simultaneously having to play a significant role in supporting your child’s/children’s learning at home. Our thoughts are with you, and we are trying to do everything we can to facilitate quality student learning and engagement remotely.
As you know, we started with an early version of our remote learning plan on March 15th soon after the school closure began. Our immediate concern and goal, at that time, was to connect with every student and family to ensure they were safe and to also set up access to remote learning opportunities that were made available on www.salemlearns.org. These opportunities included activities across content areas and a supporting printable packet.
We are now taking steps to implement enhancements to our remote learning plan that will include the components listed below. The goal of this plan is to provide a consistent structure where students are able to interact more often with their teachers and classmates. Teachers are already implementing many of these components and will do so with increasing consistency over the next couple of weeks and now that the school closure extends beyond May 4th.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge that learning at home may look different each day, and there may even be some days when it is not possible. The intent of providing the above framework is to let students and families know what is available when they are ready.
Soon PreK-Gr.5 teachers will start using Google Classroom to post and share recorded lessons and other lesson materials. Linked here is a guidance document for parents that explains how you and your student can log in to Google Classroom to find the materials that your student's teachers have chosen for the class.
Teachers will share a regular schedule for live in-person sessions so that families can count on being able to participate. Many of these sessions will use Zoom: guidance for parents on using Zoom is linked here. The printable packets will continue to be produced and made available at www.salemlearns.org. These will complement the lessons and assignments that your child’s teacher will post in Google Classroom. If you are not able to access 1) live sessions; 2) printable packets on www.salemlearns.org; or 3) Google Classroom, please let your child’s teacher know. Teachers are ready and willing to help!
Conferences and class meetings will be live, but all other activities (including recorded mini-lessons) can be done at a time that works best for you and your family. Since we know that the current health crisis influences daily life in deep and profound ways, we also recognize that the level of student engagement in remote learning will fluctuate. Our teachers and staff will be working closely with you to help ensure that your child stays connected to class activities and remote learning. We are here to support your student(s) and you!
Below is one example of what a daily student schedule might look like during remote learning. This generic schedule will be customized and adjusted accordingly to include supports and services that address specific student needs and learning profiles. Please keep in mind that the goal is for learning not to extend beyond two hours per day and that the activities can happen over the course of the day.

The remote learning platform is new for teachers, students, and families. As your child participates in live sessions, please remember that taking pictures, screenshots, or recordings of sessions is strictly prohibited. This is to protect the privacy of all of our students.
We greatly appreciate the role that you are playing at home to support learning and depending on family priorities and/or how your student is feeling on a given day, we recognize that learning may not occur as intended. That’s OK—there is always tomorrow, and we will be here to help and support you along the way.
