Dennis Skeadas never considered himself as merely a coach of the Salem High girls basketball team. To him, the Witches were a family — and would always be a family — and he was simply the common thread that ran through the program’s fibers.

Skeadas, a lifelong basketball fanatic who died over the weekend at age 72 in Beaumont, Texas, is fondly remembered for his eight seasons coaching the Witches from 1995-96 through 2002-03. Known for skill, defensive tenacity, commitment to physical condition and high-end talent, Salem never missed the playoffs during his tenure, reaching the North finals three times and the Division 2 state championship game in 1999.
