Early Education & Care
Salem Public Schools is a diverse and welcoming community that promotes each student’s academic, social, emotional, and physical development through the equitable delivery of challenging, relevant, and joyful learning experiences. We empower all students to chart a personalized path to success that includes a commitment to the common good.
Social-Emotional Learning: Family Dares
As part of our commitment to social-emotional learning inside and outside the classroom, we will feature a different dare each week here on our homepage. In grades 6-8, our teachers use Character Strong for SEL curriculum. One of the activities they have is called “Family Dares,” and they are good for all ages. Family Dares offers parents, guardians, and families the opportunity to engage in challenges designed to increase connection and conversation at home and also provides students with more opportunities to practice habits discussed in class.

Home Theater
Make some popcorn and curl up as a family with a good movie. Have all other distractions turned off and put away.
Take it up a notch by moving things around to make it more of a theater experience. Bust out some blankets, build a mini fort, or get some extra cups from a local restaurant or theater to make it feel like the real thing. Afterward, discuss the movie as a family by sharing favorite parts or lessons learned.
Salem Public Schools New Facility Project
On Wednesday, December 21st, 2022, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) recommended that the City of Salem be invited into the Eligibility Period for a new facility at the Salem High School site. The MSBA Board voted to accept this recommendation which launched Salem into a comprehensive planning process for school construction over the next five to seven years. This support of the MSBA will provide the City of Salem with reimbursement for many costs associated with this project.
Salem has long advocated for this critical capital project, and now, as we look to advance our current school facilities master plan, it is imperative that this project takes place. The Salem community, including our teachers, staff, students, and their families, have long contended with a building that has neither met their needs nor offered the best possible learning environment.
This new facility presents a tremendous opportunity for us to unite as a community to design learning spaces that match our educational goals. We will engage in citywide conversations about grade configurations, instructional philosophy, and 21st-century learning. There will be multiple ways that students, staff, families, and elected officials can be involved. Please stay tuned!
