Exciting News About Salem Public Schools

Salem community,

We want to share some exciting news that will impact future generations of Salem Public Schools. Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 21st, 2022, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) is recommending that the City of Salem be invited into the Eligibility Period for a new facility at the Salem High School site.  We expect the MSBA Board to vote to accept this recommendation which will launch Salem into a comprehensive planning process for school construction over the next five to seven years. This anticipated support of the MSBA will provide the City of Salem with reimbursement for many costs associated with this project.

Salem has long advocated for this critical capital project, and now, as we look to advance our current school facilities master plan, it is imperative that this project takes place.  The Salem community, including our teachers, staff, students, and their families, have long contended with a building that has neither met their needs nor offered the best possible learning environment.

This new facility presents a tremendous opportunity for us to unite as a community to design learning spaces that match our educational goals. We will engage in citywide conversations about grade configurations, instructional philosophy, and 21st-century learning. There will be multiple ways that students, staff, families, and elected officials can be involved. Please stay tuned!

COVID-19, the Flu, and RSV

As the calendar turns to December, many in healthcare warn of a possible “Tripledemic’ this winter. Covid-19, Influenza (the ‘flu’), and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) have been discussed in the media, and understandably, families are concerned. Additionally, due to their high transmissibility rates, it is possible to get one, two, or even all three of these viruses simultaneously. This month’s ‘Health Matters’ explores the differences and similarities among these three common viruses and, most importantly, what you can do to keep your family healthy. Read more about these three viruses here.

And as a reminder, please do not send your student to school sick, even with no symptoms. Call your school nurse for support and more information.

Social-Emotional Learning: Family Dares

As part of our commitment to social-emotional learning inside and outside the classroom, we will feature a different dare each week here on our homepage. In grades 6-8, our teachers use Character Strong for SEL curriculum. One of the activities they have is called “Family Dares,” and they are good for all ages. Family Dares offers parents, guardians, and families the opportunity to engage in challenges designed to increase connection and conversation at home and also provides students with more opportunities to practice habits discussed in class.

Record of Accomplishments

As a family, write down all that you have accomplished together over the last year. Decide on a creative way to capture all of these accomplishments.

Use photos that you’ve printed, documents that you’ve saved, or pictures on your phone as a way to jog your memory. Maybe you want to create something to hang in your home or to send out to family members. Perhaps, you prefer to create something digital to share online. Take some time to celebrate and be grateful of the good you’ve gone through.
