While the Salem Public Schools 2023-26 Strategic Plan is beginning to sunset, its core values continue to be exemplified across its schools.
On Monday, May 18, Collins Middle School grade 6 scholars partnered with Horace Mann Laboratory School pre-K students in a learning immersion at Endicott Park in Danvers, Mass. Students were paired with one another as the grade 6 students presented an activity to their pre-K counterparts: tasking them to find certain items around the Park.
“Our sixth graders were such good leaders,” said Grade 6 science educator Erica Burton.
Along the way, the grade 6 students discussed the animals in the park (miniature and regular-sized horses, donkeys, sheep, chickens, geese) and their characteristics. Prior to the immersion, Collins students visited the pre-K students at HMLS to meet, read to them and help with their unit on animals.
“They explored the barn, the pond, and the pasture with their buddies,” said Shawna Erps, early learning coordinator at SPS. “It was a great partnership and valuable learning experience for all.”
