Feb. 6 Snow Day Challenge

View the work of Carlton Innovation School second-grader Bezawit Addis and Salem High School freshman Liana Galvan

Congratulations to Carlton Innovation School second grader Bezawit Addis and Salem High School freshman Liana Galvan, each of whom won a $25 Amazon gift card for their Snow Day Challenge submissions on Thursday, Feb. 6.

The challenge to students, in honor of our Black History Month focus on Salem activists Sarah Parker Remond and Robert Morris, was to describe how they would honor Ms. Remond and/or Mr. Morris: A piece of art – drawing, painting or sketch — an essay, a poem or a video.

Ms. Addis submitted a sketch describing how she would name a park after them, adorned with statues (We like the way Ms. Addis thinks: Salem has a park named after Ms. Remond, located just off Bridge Street next to the Essex Bridge connecting Salem and Beverly).

Ms. Galvan, whose poem ‘The Sidewalks of Salem,’ was wildly popular last year, wrote another moving, passionate poem, ‘For Her Honor,’ the last line of which reveals how she would honor Ms. Remond.

We’re grateful for the artistic efforts of Ms. Addis and Ms. Galvan, and for upholding the core principles of the District’s Strategic Plan: elevate learning, empower educators, center belonging and strengthening our foundation.

Ms. Addis is the daughter of Addis Abebe and Brehan Dejen. Ms. Galvan is the daughter of Richard and Liza Galvan.
