Salem High School College Athletics Notebook: Monday, Sept. 21, 2026

Juniors Chris Qirjazi ‘23 and Malcolm Edwards ‘24, who both transferred to Salem State this fall, are part of the Vikings men’s soccer team which has raced to a 6-0 record and has yet to concede a goal this season, outsourcing foes 15-0.

Qirjazi, a midfielder who transferred from Saint Michael’s College, has played in five matches thus far and assisted on a goal in Saturday’s 4-0 win at Westfield State. Edwards, a goalkeeper who transferred from Fitchburg State, has yet to feature for the Vikings.

Sophomore Samantha Agno ‘25 has seen action in four of five matches for the Salem State women’s soccer team which is chasing its first win (0-3-2). The Vikings host Wentworth Institute of Technology – and SHS Class of 2023 graduate Isabella Cunha ‘23 – Wednesday.

Ms. Cunha has seen action in three matches this season for the Leopards (2-4-1). Freshman Elizabeth Reid ‘26 has made one appearance for the Elms College women’s soccer team, which is 3-3-1 this season; while Walbee Pierre ‘23 has seen action in two matches for the Framingham State men’s soccer team (3-3).

Junior Eli Vasquez-Bastardo ‘24 has seen action in three games for the Curry College football team with 14 tackles (4.7 per game) and highlighted with a game-winning 99-yard fumble recovery and touchdown in a 41-35 overtime victory over Coast Guard Sept. 12. Vasquez-Bastardo was named the Conference of New England Defensive Player of the Week for his clutch play.

Junior Shane Field ‘24 has played in two games with seven tackles for the Colonels, who are 1-2 entering Saturday’s clash at Maine Maritime. Freshman Oscar Fernandez ‘26 is on the football roster at Husson University, though yet to feature.

Freshman Brooks Workman ‘26 made his college cross country debut for Pomona Pitzer at the Mark Covert Invitational at Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 5 and placed 79th among 112 runners (11th among 14 Pomona runners) on the 8K course in 27:40.7. Pomona placed third overall and tops among NCAA Division III teams in the nine-team field.

Jonathan Wasserman enters his junior season on the Worcester State golf team which opens the season Wednesday at the Brett Williams Invitational in Westfield, Mass.
