Salem Public Schools Elementary Students Celebrate White Cane Safety Day at State House

Fifth-grader Eli Nagle and fourth-grader Henry Nagle of the Saltonstall School, and J.J. Reyes of Witchcraft Heights Elementary School — were invited to the Massachusetts State House to attend the White Cane Safety Day Celebration on Friday, Oct. 18.

White Cane Safety Day is celebrated each year in the U.S. on Oct. 15. The white cane is a tool for individuals who are blind or visually impaired and enables them to navigate their surroundings safely and independently.

Eli, Henry and J.J. handed out handmade pins to their classmates, staff and family to help spread awareness of the white cane. It was a particularly busy time for J.J., who was one of the featured speakers at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new WHES Playground the day prior.
