‘Be Hungry for What Comes Next’: Salem Prep High School Celebrates the Class of 2026

Salem Prep High School confers seven diplomas
SALEM (June 5, 2024) – A high school that emphasizes social emotional learning in a therapeutic environment, the buzz words spoken to the graduates of Salem Prep High School were prominent: resiliency, support, achievement and growth.
The graduating class of seven (one absentee) at Salem Prep earned their diplomas in an intimate ceremony Thursday night at Turner’s Seafood at Lyceum Hall.
In her welcoming address, Principal Lisa O’Neill described the Class of 2026 as the definition of resilience and urged the graduates to take their experience at Salem Prep with them. “Remember the lessons you learned here,” she noted. “Take a deep breath. Look around the room. These are your people. We genuinely love you.”
Along with Salem Public Schools Interim Superintendent Kate Carbone, Deputy Superintendent Elizabeth Pauley and School Committee member Beth Anne Cornell, in attendance was Yamily Byas, a member of the School Committee who served as a student support specialist at Salem Prep from (2021-24).
“I was honored to be at Salem Prep’s graduation in two ways: serving on the School Committee and also having worked here a couple of years ago,” said Ms. Byas.”Watching students step into what’s next was powerful. I know first hand how hard these kids worked and how dedicated all the educators at Salem Prep are. I wish them all the best.”
Ms. Carbone echoed Ms. O’Neill’s sentiments on resilience.
“Some of you arrived at Salem Prep facing setbacks, carrying doubts, disconnected, and with obstacles,” Ms. Carbone noted. “But you are here tonight and that’s what matters. Salem Prep is where students are seen and driven by a unique group of educators.
“Each of you possess strengths and talents,” she added. “You leave with more than a diploma. You leave with skills, how to keep going on a path that is uncertain. Your future is not defined by where you started. You’ve earned the right to celebrate what you’ve accomplished.”
Also among the guests was former superintendent Dr. Stephen Zrike, named the Massachusetts Secretary of Education in March, who lauded the class for its collective achievements and overcoming the challenges on the way to receiving their diplomas.
Considering the venue, he appropriately likened the commencement to merely the appetizer at a restaurant.
“This is only the first course,” he said. “Enjoy the appetizer, but don’t lose your appetite. Your story is still being written. We know there is much more to come. Be hungry for what comes next. The best part of the meal is yet to come.”
Dr. Zrike also reminded the class of how supported they are, noting how nearly every Salem Prep staff member was in attendance.
“Salem Prep is a place that prioritizes the social and mental health of others,” he noted. “I’ve watched you all since middle school. I’m amazed at the achievements you’ve made along the way.”
In describing her pathway to graduation as one full of significant detours and hurdles, the remarks by senior Jaylan Hines embodied the very mission of Salem Prep.
“I didn’t want to be a failure,” Ms. Hines said. “I wanted to accomplish things for myself and be myself. We’ve all had moments where we wanted to quit, but we all found ways to solve problems.”
