Over the next few weeks, Spaulding Adaptive Sports will be visiting Salem Public Schools to provide scholars the opportunity to learn and experience sports and activities designed for individuals of all abilities.
On Wednesday, Saltonstall School grade 6 and 7 scholars experienced wheelchair basketball and boccia.
“Most of them didn’t know what an adaptive sport was,” said Shannon Tucker, physical education teacher at Saltonstall. “They also didn’t know they’d have way more fun than they imagined.”
The event was part of the Sports, Equity, Education program at SPS. Scholars throughout the district will also experience adaptive archery and beep baseball at later dates.
“This is an education event for students to be aware of different sports and activities for people of all abilities,” said Michelle Flewelling, a certified orientation & mobility specialist and physical therapy assistant at SPS. “The kids had a great time. I feel like they’ve learned what disability means.”
