CMS Grade Six Scholars’ House Web Promotes Kindness, Relationship Building

The Salem Public Schools Strategic Plan in action…
On Wednesday, May 7 Collins Middle School grade 6 scholars began their morning with the whole grade community building activity to promote kindness and to better understand how being kind to one person can be connected throughout our community.
Under the direction of Dean of Students and School Culture Terrell Greene, scholars played a game called house web in which they were grouped by house (Grey Reef, Great White, Goblin, Blue, and Hammerhead) and were given a spool of yarn matching the color of their house. Students held a piece of the yarn, chose a student they knew or didn’t know, and said something kind to that person (ex: I like your shirt, you’re a good friend, I like your laugh, etc).
At the end of the exercise the students created a web with this yarn to help give the visualization of how kindness runs through our community and is connected with all members of our community.
For the final exercise, students remained in their house and developed a unique chant to use in the next coming pep rally. Once they developed their chant, the chosen scribe for the house recorded the chant and handed it in. Students will be able to share and teach their chant in the coming school year to incoming students to their houses.
