Three retired numbers grace the wall of the Salem High School: One of a former NBA player, one of an NBA draft selection and, as of Friday, the greatest women’s basketball player in SHS history now an all-star educator, coach and mentor.
Evelyn Oquendo ’82 joined former Witches standouts Rick Brunson ’91 and Scoonie Penn ’96 when her No. 24 jersey was retired Friday night in front of well over 100 co-workers, community and state leaders, former SHS and Salem State teammates, school committee members and family at the Veterans Memorial Field House.
