Mobile Museum of Tolerance Visits Collins Middle School With Messages of Support, Empathy

Collins Middle School has added a new classroom, albeit temporary.
The Mobile Museums of Tolerance, making Salem Public Schools its first stop in Massachusetts, was parked in front of the main entrance to the school Monday and Tuesday, educating eighth grade students on tolerance. As part of the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, students spent the hour learning about tolerance, watching a film depicting how Adolf Hitler came to power in 1930s Germany, the impact of propaganda, with a discussion afterward.
The Mobile Museum of Tolerance was brought to Collins by Innovation Manager Elena Rodriguez-DePaul and conducted 10 one-hour lessons for the entire eighth grade Monday and Tuesday with the goal for students to take responsibility and support vulnerable students and community members.
“We’re always looking for ways to educate our students outside the classroom,” said Ms. Rodriguez-DePaul.
- At the conclusion of Tuesday’s classes, students offered their opinions of what they learned:
- To treat others the way you want to be treated
- The need to engage in these lessons to keep history from repeating
- Having the ability to distinguish between the acceptable and unacceptable, and to speak up and hold firm in their beliefs
