NATICK (May 31, 2024) – Freshman sprinter Alex Done won the Division I/Tier 2 100 meter dash to lead the Salem High School Unified Track and Field Team at the MIAA Unified Track and Field Championship Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Park.

Done’s feat highlighted several stellar efforts on the day as he became SHS’s third Unified Track and Field state champion in as many years, joining teammates Jonathan Cote (2022 Division I/Tier 2 champion in the 100 meter dash) and Julie Edmunds (2023 Division 1/Tier 2 javelin champion).

“It feels good to crown our third State Champion in as many years, but it feels even better knowing our school and District support us so fervently,” said coach Angie Giancola. “The continued support, encouragement, and buy-in has made all the difference for our program.”

Host Natick High School won the Division 1 title for the second straight year, compiling 264 points to best Wahconah H.S. (112) and Weymouth H.S. (104). Wareham H.S. won the Division 2 title with 81 points, just ahead of Sandwich H.S. (79) and Dighton-Rehoboth H.S. (71).

SHS placed ninth with 50 points. An estimated 500 athletes participated, representing 55 high schools (22 Division 1; 33 Division 2).

Done won the 100 meter dash in 30.97 seconds. His result was one of a host of stellar efforts on the day as Gianmarcos Jimenez placed second in the Division 1/Tier 4 400 meter dash in 1:17.54.

Additionally, the foursome of Mady Christie, Jayden Lopez, Julian Tyler and Erik Shehaj finished runner-up in the Division 1/Tier 1 4X100 meter relay in 59.93 seconds, a shade behind first-place Natick (59.34).

“It is a complete thrill for these kids to compete against hundreds of athletes, to step out of their box to meet new competitors and make new friends,” Coach Giancola added. “They were actively giving pep talks to teammates before their events.”
