SALEM (May 13, 2024) – Fifteen juniors and seniors were inducted into the Salem High School National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society Tuesday night in a ceremony at the SHS Library.
With the new class, SHS’s chapter of the NHS expanded to 25 members. To earn induction, Salem students must:
- Maintain a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average
- Take part in a minimum three different activities
- Perform a minimum of 20 hours of community service
- Provide two letters of recommendation from educators, and
- Exemplify the four pillars of the NHS: scholarship, service, leadership and character.
“What makes this group unique is its sense of rebuilding and resetting the standard of community service that was somewhat lost during the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Catherine Coleman, Math Educator and NHS Advisor at SHS. “This group is definitely working to bring back the sense of service to others, and how we make that contagious within the community.”
The guest speaker for the Induction was Amanda Mazola, SHS Class of 2013 and former NHS inductee, who is currently a nurse at Exeter (N.H.) Hospital. Ms. Mazola spoke of the importance of service and leadership and cited the examples she witnessed during the pandemic, not only involving nurses but law enforcement and first responders.
Inductees were also given the opportunity to honor their mentor/educator of choice, which exemplifies the four core priorities of the District’s Strategic Plan: elevate learning, empower educators, center belonging and strengthen the District’s foundation.
