Salem Public Schools Heat Advisory for Wednesday, May 20, 2026

Posted on: May 19, 2026
Open letter from Superintendent Dr. Stephen Zrike

With temperatures expected to surpass 90 degrees again tomorrow (Wednesday, May 20), Salem Public Schools is mindful of the impact of excessive heat during learning. Our top priority is providing our students and staff a safe and comfortable learning environment.

We will keep air conditioning units running overnight tonight so that schools start off cool in the morning and are ready for the heat. This is an unusual step that we take only during extremely hot weather.

Students are encouraged to wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.

Water stations will be fully accessible all day, so please send your child to school with a labeled, reusable water bottle. Cups will be made available to students without water bottles.

Contingent on the temperature, staff may move physical education classes, recesses, sports programs and after-school activities indoors to cooler spaces.

Outdoor time during peak midday sun will be closely monitored and possibly cut short.

If your child has a medical condition that makes them especially sensitive to heat, please contact the main office at your school so we can accommodate them.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Elizabeth Pauley, Deputy Superintendent
