SALEM (July 19, 2024) – The Career Technical Education Department at Salem High School received a $480,000 Career Technical Initiative Round 9 grant, the administration of Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll announced Tuesday.
With the grant, SHS will provide training to 60 participants for Automotive Technology and Building and Property Maintenance positions and will partner with Herb Chambers Automotive Group, Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, Sudbay Motors, Habitat for Humanity, Home Depot, and the Carpenters Local 723 Union.
The award was part of $13.4 million in grants awarded to 21 high school vocational programs statewide to train more than 1,600 jobseekers for careers in high-demand occupations such as construction and manufacturing sectors in partnership with over 180 employers across Massachusetts.
“We are honored to receive this very generous grant,” said Mario Sousa, CTE Director and Co-op Coordinator at SHS. “We’re grateful not only for this grant, but that our state leadership recognizes the need and the benefits for robust vocational education so that our students can enter the workforce fully prepared.”
The CTI grant is the third award presented to the SHS CTE program in recent months. In April, the SHS CTE program received a $20,000 grant from Angela’s Daycare to benefit its Early Childhood Education track. In mid-June, SHS received a $347,000 capital skills grant to provide new training equipment for small engines and hybrid and electric vehicles for the Automotive and Marine Technology track.
Additionally, the automotive program was gifted a 2023 Mustang GT from McGovern Ford in Saugus in late June.
The CTI grant aligns with the core values of the District’s Strategic Plan, which is to elevate learning, empower educators, center belonging and strengthen the District’s foundation.
