SALEM (Dec. 11, 2024) – Twenty-seven student musicians were inducted into the Salem High School Tri-M Music Honor Society – celebrating its 25th induction ceremony – Wednesday, Dec. 4 at the M. Ruth Norton Auditorium. 

The ceremony was led by long-time music educator and Tri-M Chapter No. 3362 advisor Cynthia Napierkowski. Presiding over the induction were senior inductees Linus Owen and Taliyah Perrin.

The ceremony came in the midst of what has been an outstanding academic year for SHS musicians. On Sunday, Nov. 3, the SHS Marching Band and Colorguard captured the New England Marching Band Association (NESBA) Division 3 state championship at Lawrence H.S.

In late November, seven student musicians – among them Tri-M inductees Mr. Owen and juniors William Towne, Wyn Stevick and Daniel Alley – were selected to the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) Northeastern District Senior Festival to be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at Lexington H.S.

To be eligible for the Tri-M Music Honor Society, students must meet the following criteria: 

  • Enrolled in their third year of the honors section of either band, orchestra or chorus
  • Maintain minimum A-minus average in music classes and a minimum B average in all other coursework.
  • Demonstrate leadership and involvement in school-sponsored activities.
  • Perform a requisite amount of community service hours without compensation.
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member detailing respect, responsibility and character.

Guest speaker for the ceremony was Alexander Grover, Class of 2005, who was presented the Tri-M Music Honor Society Alumni Achievement Award, presented to alumni for outstanding service in the field of music. Mr. Grover is currently the High School Choral Director and Grade 6-12 Coordinator of Performing Arts at Danvers Public Schools.
