Wheat farming. Skillet flatbread. CPS certification.

Salem Public Schools Vacation Academy was buzzing over April break.

Pre-K and elementary students engaged in a STEM-focused farm-to-table themed week. Through a partnership with New Entry Sustainable Farming Project and Iron Ox Farm, students learned about the wheat plant and met farmer Stacy Apple of Iron Ox Farm who provided students with insights into wheat cultivation. Integrating geometry standards, students developed and designed scaled wheat farms. To finish out the week students utilized flour provided by King Arthur Baking Company to create skillet flatbread.

Middle school students participated in a work-based learning program in collaboration with the Salem YMCA and The Salem Pantry. Divided into various work based learning tracks, students acquired essential skills relevant to future employment. Additionally, all participating middle school students earned CPR certification.

The successful week was in part due to all SPS staff members who dedicated their April vacation to ensure these programs were engaging and beneficial for students and their families.

Individuals interested in participating in future Vacation Program opportunities are encouraged to connect with their school’s City Connects Coordinator.
