SPS received $169,175 to grow its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum by enabling it to purchase lab equipment, materials, supplies, and technology. Additionally, it funds professional development opportunities for educators that support the implementation of advanced curricula and standards.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates our administration’s commitment to supporting the life sciences industry, including by investing in education and training opportunities that will inspire a new generation of life science and STEM field workers,” said Governor Healey. “By sparking early interest in the life sciences among students and funding industry-aligned programs, we are creating a world-class talent pipeline and supporting the continued growth of life sciences companies in Massachusetts.”

The grant is expected to serve 3,680 students in Salem.

The grant aligns perfectly with the core principles of the District’s 2023-26 Strategic Plan, particularly elevating education, in which students will have access to cutting edge supplies and equipment; and empowering educators through professional development.

Salem Public Schools has been the recipient of several generous grants in recent months. Last week, the Salem High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) department received the $480,000 Career Technical Initiative Grant from the Healey-Driscoll Administration, just weeks after the department received a 2023 Mustang GT, donated by McGovern Ford of Saugus.

In July, the SPS Food and Nutrition Services department received the Eos Foundation Healthy Start Award, which included a $500 grant.

In June, the CTE program received the Capital Skills Grant of $347,000 to provide new training equipment for small engines, and hybrid and electric vehicles, in the CTE automotive technologies program.
